Kenya Brown -San Francisco, CA
This playlist is inspired by another playlist centered around quality music. This playlist hopes to blend and distort genre lines and instead emphasizes good quality music. Vibe out and enjoy the listen :)
Rémy Baheux -Seattle, WA
For this is a playlist, I gave myself the challenge to think about the years of struggling with my identity and who I am. It's a little taste of that for me and when I sat down to write this, I got a sense of how much more bothered by my experience than I've let on. Here's an excerpt out of the couple pages I wrote about my experience.
"For the longest time due to how being Black is portrayed, I was scared or refused to acknowledge fully that I was. Every time I did, due to how I acted and my ambiguous color I was shot down, by many in all which ways. I lost track of the amount of times growing up, someone said that I was "too white to be black" and that I didn't "act" Black. What was a passing comment for them that they promptly forgot, to me impacted my whole sense of self and what I was for years. How often media portrayed a negative image of being Black and how little role models I had growing up. How frequently I was harassed and stopped by white people, told to leave stores, and yelled at unprompted. When I asked why, I would be told I looked suspicious, that I didn't belong, or some other excuse to berate or threaten me and I didn't know why. How kids in my childhood would treat me and I was left confused and not understanding why. It took me a long time to realize that these microaggressions and attacks on me were based on race."
This playlist to me is a mix of what I've been listening to both old and new that I can really feel like myself. The sexy grooves, the unapologetic hits, and the love I like my life now. Hope you enjoy these tracks as much as I do!
Juan Washington - Santa Rosa, CA
Presenting a micro focused hybrid set comprised of international artists of many genres and languages on a global scale. I believe it is not only important to recognize the BIPOC individuals in our community, but to recognize and respect the culture, languages, and sounds from our countries of origin.
DJ Volter - Kyle Killough - Orlando, FL
For February especially I decided that packing a few feels and running adjacent with a bit of a Valentine's Day Feel would not be a bad option.
So I set about on an journey of songs that captures feels ,the edges of emotions, and calls to listeners to bring to their mind the emotions expressed; and, for those who see themselves dancing when they hear these in either micro dances, aggressive micro dances, micro-challenge songs, and as closely connected low to mid energy moving instruments in these songs.
With the backdrop of Valentine's Day, I present to you, DJ Volter's take- for your consideration.
BAmF is excited to announce a monthly-ish series of playlists for 2021! Each month, we’re giving the floor to a new DJ who will blow your mind with something from their back catalog that you’ve probably never heard before.
We’re going to start 2021 by celebrating and featuring Black voices, before opening it up to other marginalized identities towards the end of the year.
These playlists are designed to broaden your horizons, bring new things to your ears, and challenge your idea of what fusion music can be. Each playlist will be released with notes from the DJ about what you should know, how to approach the set, and maybe even some history.
The goal here is twofold. We want to uplift and transport you, and we also want to expand your musical horizons a bit. Every DJ has a set of tracks that they absolutely love, but never get to play because they’re too challenging, too edgy, or too different. This is your chance to hear those tracks; the things that are so incredible the dance floor isn’t ready for them... yet.
Strap on some headphones or turn up your speakers as you go about your day. Read the notes so you know what’s up, and then get ready to hear something new.
We can’t wait to share these with you.
PS - If you know any DJs we should feature, especially DJs with BIPOC perspectives, please let us know! We’d love to partner with them.
